Dear cinephiles,
As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the year that was and all that cinema had to offer in the past 12 months. Twitter discourse aside — it’s been a great year for cinema. And as we step into 2025 in just a few short hours, I wanted to share my final stats, thoughts, and reviews with you.
Here is how 2024 went for me according to Letterboxd:
226 films seen
190 unique films seen (yes, I love a rewatch)
99 new (2024) releases seen
88 trips to the cinema
84 different films seen on the big screen (I’ve seen Anora and Challengers three times each)
5 new (2024) 5-star films
4.3 films per week averaged
2 festivals attended
Below, I am sharing my top rated films of the year and I’m curious to hear what were your favourites of 2024!
My top rated 2024 releases
*considering theatrical releases for Canada/Germany where I’ve lived this year, some of these films premiered in 2023 - but also including some 2025 theatrical releases that I’ve seen at festivals this year

Heretic
Heretic was coincidentally my last cinema visit of 2024. For 2025, my very first trip to the cinema is already scheduled for tomorrow, January 1st. I’ll be seeing a double feature of Better Man and Nosferatu with my parents. I’ve also already started planning my festival schedule for the year as I’m hoping to attend more than 2024’s two festivals. And as always, I will probably be seeing 4ish films per week and trying to catch as many new releases as possible, and looking to review as many as I can here.
2024 was also the year in which I started Cinephile in Black and White, wanting to share my thoughts on films that I watch in a more structured format than the one-liners I post on Letterboxd. So far, it’s been a great experience connecting with fellow cinephiles through it, and I can only hope it continues on the same trajectory in the new year.
As always, thank you for reading and I can’t wait to see you again in just a few short days with my first review of 2025. Spoiler alert: it will be Nosferatu.
love this! i write about film too, please check my substack out if you’re interested!
